International trademarks (the Madrid system)

When there are plans to operate under a trademark outside of Ukraine, selecting multiple countries as the field of activity, the logical decision is to opt for international registration under the Madrid System.

This will be a great option for companies or entrepreneurs exporting their goods or services to multiple countries simultaneously.

Currently, this procedure is much more convenient and faster when filing international applications from Ukraine compared to many other countries, as Ukraine is one of the 21 countries that have implemented the system of electronic filing of international applications.

What is the procedure for international trademark registration?

First, you need to file an application for trademark registration in Ukraine (if you haven’t done so already).

Based on the application filed in Ukraine, an international application is submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), indicating the countries in which the owner wants to obtain trademark registration.

The registration process under this procedure takes 12 to 18 months from filing the application with the WIPO system.

This system offers bonuses. Through a single centralized system, you can make all changes, such as changing the name of the trademark owner, the address of the trademark owner, the correspondence address, reducing the list of goods or services, and also extending the validity of the International registration.

The duration of the international trademark is 10 years, and after the expiration of this period, to renew the trademark, you only need to pay the fee and submit the corresponding application.
